Gold pendants and chains held in hand

Your neck is not standard.

If you have a 16” collar shirt, a 20” chain sits exactly on your collarbone. If you have a 17.5” collar shirt, the same 20” chain sits two inches above the collarbone, which reads visually short. If you have a 15” collar, that 20” chain hangs below the sternum, which reads visually long. Three different men, same chain, three different looks. None of them are wrong but only one is what the wearer actually wanted.

That’s the case for custom chains, and most UK men buying their first higher-end chain don’t realise it until they’ve worn a standard-length piece for a few weeks and noticed it doesn’t sit quite right. Width works the same way: a 4mm chain looks slim on a 17.5” neck and chunky on a 15” neck. Material, clasp type, and length all interact with body frame in ways no standard sizing chart can predict.

This is the UK guide to ordering a custom men’s chain in 2026.

I run Monrich, a UK men’s jewellery brand offering custom length options on standard chains. Disclosure up front.

Section 01

What counts as a custom chain?

Birth year necklace, custom year pendant

“Custom” spans a wide range:

Light customisation (typical of mass-market brands)

  • Non-standard length (e.g. 23 inches instead of 22 or 24)
  • Specific clasp type request
  • Personalised engraving on connector or clasp

Mid customisation (specialist jewellers)

  • Custom width within link style (e.g. 4.5mm Cuban)
  • Mixed metal sections (gold + silver)
  • Custom clasp design

Full bespoke (master jewellers)

  • Hand-forged links to your specification
  • Custom link patterns
  • Mixed materials with custom design
  • Unique pieces from sketch to finished chain

The price gap between these levels is significant.

Section 02

Standard customisation options

Most accessible brands offer some standard customisation:

Length adjustment

  • Specific inch lengths (e.g. 21 inches if 22 is too long)
  • Most brands offer 18, 20, 22, 24 inches as standard. Specific custom lengths typically £15-40 extra.

Clasp choice

  • Lobster claw (standard)
  • Spring clasp
  • Box clasp
  • Bayonet clasp
  • Custom branded clasp
  • Most brands charge £10-30 extra for non-standard clasps.

Engraving

  • Clasp engraving (initials, date)
  • Connector engraving
  • Pendant engraving
  • Often free or £10-30 extra.

Material upgrade

  • Stainless to sterling silver
  • Sterling to gold-plated
  • Plated to solid gold (requires full rebuild)

Monrich offers custom length on chains and free engraving on personalisation-eligible pieces.

Mixed metals

A custom chain combining solid gold + sterling silver, or rose gold + yellow gold, in specific patterns. Cost varies based on gold content.

Custom link patterns

Designs not in any standard catalogue. The jeweller works from your sketch or design brief. Cost varies based on complexity.

Heirloom recreations

Recreating an old family chain (perhaps damaged or in a style no longer manufactured) in modern metal. Cost varies based on complexity and material.

How to brief a custom chain order

Master jewellers ask the same questions before starting a custom commission. Knowing the answers in advance speeds the process.

1. Material: solid gold (and which karat: 9K, 14K, 18K, 22K), sterling silver, platinum. Each material has different weight, density, durability characteristics.

2. Total length: in inches or centimetres. Measure your existing chains for reference.

3. Width: in millimetres. Carry a sample piece to the consultation if possible.

4. Link style: Cuban, curb, Figaro, rope, custom pattern. Be specific.

5. Clasp type: lobster claw (standard), spring clasp, box clasp, custom design.

6. Surface finish: mirror polish, matte, brushed, hammered, diamond-cut.

7. Engraving: any text or symbol on the clasp or connector.

8. Budget range: master jewellers work backwards from the budget to material weight and complexity.

9. Timeline: for time-sensitive orders (gift, wedding, milestone), state this up front.

The master jeweller will typically propose a quote within 1-2 weeks of the initial brief, with sketches or photo references of similar past work.

The piece that looks the part on day one and the piece that holds up at month six are rarely the same piece.

Common custom requests

Longer-than-standard chain for taller wearers

6‘2”+ men often want 24-26 inches. Most brands offer 24 inches as standard, 26 as custom.

Shorter-than-standard chain for smaller-framed men

5‘7” and below men often prefer 18-20 inches. Most brands have 18-20 in stock.

Wider-than-standard Cuban chain

The market offers 4-8mm standard. Anything 10mm+ is custom territory. Cost increases significantly with width because more gold/metal is needed.

Mixed gold-tone chain (yellow + white gold)

Custom layout in master jeweller workshops. £2000-8000+ for solid gold mixed.

Custom-engraved clasp

Adding initials, date, or symbol to the clasp itself. Often available for £20-50 extra at brands offering engraving.

Chain to specifically hold a specific pendant

For a pendant with a specific loop / bail dimension, a chain with matching dimensions might need to be custom.
